SNWC was launched on Jan 1, 1999 under the branding Weather 21 and was initially available on Austar channel lineup at it onset. Cox Inall Communications built the station while the metrological assistance service The Weather Company was held by Austar. Initially the content was aimed at rural and remote regional audiences of the Austar. Lyndal Davies, Mark Hardy and Allan Humphries made the first crop of presenters at the upstart weather service and presented live weather news and forecasts from 6am to 10pm each weekday. The overnight content would include preset satellite and radar forecasts and music.
Following the unification of Austar and Foxtel in 2012 which resulted in disbanding of XYX Networks, it was revealed that from Nov 30, 2012, the management and operational charge of the TWC would be assumed by Sky News Australia. It was also announced that the service would be relaunched as Sky News Weather in 2013; the channel was rechristened as Sky News Weather on Jan 25, 2013.
