CTV N1 was launched on Sep 30, 1997 by CTV Television Network Ltd. after CRTC gave green signal to CTV Television Network Ltd. in Sep 1996. The English language specialty channel would broadcast news, sports stories, weather updates, business, personal finance programming and more. The newscast would initially include a 15-minute news wheel. Under the terms signed by News 1 in the licensing it would broadcast a 15 min newscast every 15 minutes. It vowed to establish itself as a top-notch news service in the wake of lockout suffered by CBC Television and CBC Newsworld.

Before the format change in Aug 2005, the sports segments and business news were produced in partnership with TSN ad Business News Network: BNN respectively as they were under the ownership of same owner as that of Newsnet and CTV. However during the earlier days of the service, weather reports and forecasts was sourced by The Weather Network while sports slot was supplemented by Headline Sports and later CTV Sportsnet.

On May 26, 2009, the channel was renamed as CTV News Channel.  Bell Canada on Sep 10, 2010 announced their plans to acquired 100% stake in CTVglobemedia; the USD 3.2b deal received CRTC approval on March 7, 2011 and was consummated in April 2011. CTVglobemedia was rechristened as Bell Media on April 1, 2011. A new weekday lineup was introduced on Oct 3, 2011 with the addition of National Affairs, Direct and Express four news hosts were staffed.
