Beijing Winter Olympics are going ahead regardless of travel in and out of China being severely restricted since the deadly pandemic started. In addition, those individuals traveling to Beijing for the games must use charter flights and stay in their bubble until they leave. Before and after arriving in China, travelers should need to clear Coronavirus tests, with tens of thousands inside the bubble also experiencing daily virus testing other than expected to wear face masks.
Several People in China will Face COVID-related Testing
On Sunday, the National Health Commission of China (NHC) reported twenty new Coronavirus cases in Beijing – the highest since June 2020. AFP news agency reported that local officials locked down housing compounds in the Fengtai district – where several of the new cases were reported. Around two million individuals will face testing for the virus in response.
Yesterday, the NHC reported fifty-four new cases countrywide in total, including cases in the eastern city of Suifenhe and Hangzhou in Heilongjiang province. Since the first outbreak in December 2019, China maintained a zero-Coronavirus policy, with local transmission met with severe restrictions and countrywide testing to curb the spread. Since then, the nation reported around one lac twenty thousand cases and forty-six hundred Coronavirus deaths – much less than the statistics reported by other major countries. U.S. lawmakers urged American Olympic officials to prepare to defend U.S. athletes from likely Chinese government retaliation.
