Canada Lifted Ban on Vaccinated US Citizens for Border Crossing

On Monday, Canada reopened its border with the United States to vaccinated citizens against COVID-19 for non-essential travel,

On Monday, Canada reopened its land border for the vaccinated United States citizens for unnecessary travel, and it is the first time the United States could do since March of 2020. On the other hand, the U.S. is maintaining similar restrictions for the citizens of Canada, part of the uncomfortable return to normal routine from coronavirus travel bans.

So, according to the new Canadian policy, visitors must provide a negative coronavirus test taken within the previous seventy-two hours and proof of full vaccination with a Canadian health department-approved vaccine, along with filling out an application. Canadian citizens can access the application by downloading the smartphone app, arriveCAN. However, the officials of the country also warn that they won’t compromise safety for shorter border waits.

According to the chief executive of the tunnel, Neil Belitsky, the administration reopened the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel to no lines for vaccinated U.S. visitors to Canada. As a result, around two-thirds of its traffic stopped during the COVID-19 outbreak. The tunnel ran beneath the Detroit River and handled roughly four million vehicles yearly. Furthermore, the United States-Canada border closed to unnecessary travel since March of 2020 in an effort to slow the spread of the pandemic.

When will the U.S. open its border for Canadians?

The United States officials said that it decided to extend its closure to all citizens of Canada, making unnecessary tours until at least 21st August, which also applies to the Mexican border. However, the Biden government is starting for a phased reopening. The key requirement would be that approximately all foreign visitors to the United States will need to vaccinate against the COVID-19.

On the other hand, Canadians are not waiting for reciprocal rules. An Essex, Vermont-based company, Garnet Health, is offering same-day coronavirus testing, and it saw the number of tests it performs over triple in recent weeks. The surge in testing coincides with the decision of Canada last month to drop a fourteen-day quarantine requirement for its citizens when they return home from the United States.

Some Americans said they decided to cross the U.S.-Canada border at their first opportunity and preferred to reunite with their partners and loved ones. Moreover, the Public Health Agency of Canada said that these coronavirus-related restrictions are relaxing because of mounting rates and declining coronavirus cases. However, as of 7th August, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put Canada at Level 3: High for coronavirus. While Level 4 of COVID-19 is the highest warning.

Who will be eligible for unnecessary travel at the U.S.-Canada starting Monday?

The United States vaccinated citizens and permanent vaccinated residents who at present reside in the U.S., are traveling from American are eligible for the entry criteria. They should receive the complete dose of vaccination fourteen days before entering Canada for nonessential travel. The following vaccines are acceptable by the government of Canada:

  • Moderna
  • Janssen (Johnson & Johnson)
  • Pfizer-BioNTech
  • AstraZeneca/Covishield

Travelers must have proof of vaccination in French or English or a certified translation, along with the original document for both vaccination doses, if applicable. However, travelers can receive their vaccines in any country.
