Juventus have won their 9th consecutive Serie A title after thwarting aside Sampdoria 2-0. Ronaldo who has now won 7 league titles in 3 different countries dedicated Old Lady’s record extending 9th title in a row to the fans as he contributed with a goal to edge past Sampdoria in Turin. The Portuguese forward netted his 31s goal of the season from Miralem Pjanic’s short free-kick to put his team ahead before another goal by Federico Bernardeschi concluded the victory at home.
Maurizio Sarri was all smiles after claiming his first Serie A title as Juventus became the only club to clinch 9 successive titles in one of Europe’s top five games. The franchise extended it own record that was tied by Bundesliga Champions, Bayern Munich in June. Ronaldo who played a key role in helping the Old Lady over the line missed a chance to get closer to Ciro Immobile’s tally of 34 goals as he squandered the penalty by hitting against the crossbar in the last moments of the game.
Sarri also missed a chance to claim title earlier on Tuesday when they lost to Udinese and kicked off Sunday’s tie having just one win in their last 5 games. They looked far form their usual best and despite playing at home felt the heat but Bernardeschi’s strike from Ronaldo’s saved attempt ensured the former Chelsea boss the maiden top-flight League title of his managerial career. For the visitors, the recovery became more difficult as they were one less than Juventus after Morten Thorsby was sent off the pitch with a red.
“It told the players if you win with me who has never won anything, it is because you are really strong,” said Sarri, whose only major title in past was the Europa League Silverware with Chelsea in May 2019.
Ronaldo
Ronaldo, 35 with 10 goals since the resumption of Italian soccer on June 20, is now leading the tally after the return of the game in Europe.
“Delighted for the second consecutive championship and to continue building the history of this great and splendid club,” said Ronaldo on Instagram.
“This title is dedicated to all Juventus fans, in particular to those who have suffered and are suffering from the pandemic that has taken us all by surprise by overturning the world.
“It was not easy. Your courage, your attitude and your determination were the strength we needed to face this tight final of the championship and fight to the end for this title that belongs to all of Italy.
“A big hug to you all.”
