Muslims Protest at American Embassy in Indonesia over Israeli Airstrikes

On Friday, over a thousand Muslims gathered outside the United States Embassy in the capital of Indonesia to condemn American support for Israel and to record protest against the Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. Moreover, the protestors also demanded an ended to the Israeli violence in Palestine. After the Friday prayers, protestors marched from several Masjids to a major street outside the American embassy, which was under heavy police guard.

The crowd also blocked the traffic along the way as they chanted slogans such as ‘Allah o Akbar,’ ‘Save Palestinians,’ and ‘Allah is Great.’ On the other side, the administration of the demonstration warned protestors through loudspeakers to maintain social distancing during the march under the management of the Islamic Student Association and many other groups to prevent the COVID-19 from spreading.

The administration deployed Over three thousand police wearing hazmat suits and other guard equipment to secure the embassy and the neighboring presidential palace and the mission of the United Nations. The world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, Indonesia, doesn’t have official diplomatic relations with Israel, so there is no Israeli embassy in the country.

Joko Widodo, the President of Indonesia, condemned the brutal Israeli airstrikes on Palestinian civilians. According to some media reports, similar protests held in at least ten provincial capitals and major cities across Indonesia after the Friday prayers.
