Russia may Strike Ukrainian Civilian Infrastructure – US Warned

Russian forces are “stepping up their efforts in the coming days” to strike Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and government facilities, the United States warned Tuesday. A similar warning from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about possible Russian actions coincided with Ukraine’s Independence Day, which the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv posted.

The U.S. Embassy said that Russian strikes continue to threaten civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, recommending that U.S. citizens leave the country if they can. The 31st anniversary of Ukraine’s independence from Soviet rule and the beginning of Russia’s war is six months since Ukraine gained independence from Soviet rule.

The Ukrainian capital canceled Independence Day celebrations amid warnings. During a visit to Kyiv on Tuesday, Polish President Andrzej Duda discussed military, economic, and humanitarian support for Ukraine with Zelenskyy and other officials. Pawel Szrot, the director of Duda’s office, told reporters the neighbors would also discuss “how Poland can influence other countries to help.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military said Tuesday that new airstrikes and artillery fire were launched in the Zaporizhzhia region, where fighting has raised safety concerns near Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

Ukrainian Casualties in War

It has been approximately six months since Russia attacked Ukraine, which has led to the death of nearly 9,000 soldiers. Furthermore, it is the first time since April that Ukraine’s military loss has been officially counted, according to General Zaluzhnyi at a veterans’ event. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, has caused more than 5,500 civilian deaths, the United Nations says.

In a statement Monday, the U.N. children’s agency confirmed at least 972 Ukrainian children have died or been injured in the violence but said the actual figure is probably much higher. The use of explosive weapons has caused most of the casualties among children, according to UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell.

United States Security Warning

US embassy officials in Kyiv issued a security alert as tensions escalated in the capital. The embassy again appealed to U.S. nationals to leave Ukraine as tensions grew in the capital. Department of State officials have received information that Russia is preparing to launch strikes against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and government facilities.

Russian intelligence has also been accused of carrying out the assassination of a prominent ultranationalist intellectual’s daughter on Saturday in Moscow, which has heightened concern. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov attended a news conference in Moscow and said that the investigation should be completed shortly.”

Throughout the capital city of Kyiv, security has been tightened, mass events have been banned, and major festivals have been postponed—the street has instead been lined with captured and destroyed Russian military equipment—and other cities, including Kharkiv, have extended curfews overnight. In Mariupol, occupied by Russian forces, reports emerged that Russian-backed authorities were erecting steel cages. Zelensky warned that Moscow might orchestrate show trials of captured prisoners of war.

As a result of threats surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine, Russia has asked that the U.N. Security Council convene an emergency meeting. In the latest statement to The Washington Post, the Russian mission to the United Nations spokesman Theodore Strzhizhovskiy confirmed the meeting would take place on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Eastern time.
