Search for Missing and Dead Ends at Florida Condo Collapse

Search and rescue workers officially announced to end their search for victims at a collapsed Florida condo site. Around ninety-seven people killed in the collapse that occurred in the early hours of 24th June in the Miami district of Surfside. However, one person still remains missing in the disaster.

On Friday, during a ceremony to conclude the operations, Alan Cominsky, the Fire Chief, admired the fighters who worked twelve-hour shifts searching for victims and survivors in the past month. But, he said that he could not be the producer of the women and men that signify Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Moreover, the spot of the condo collapse mostly cleared of rubble, and the wreckage transported to a Miami warehouse. The single survivors found in the wreck had discovered some hours after the collapse. Rescue crews spent approximately two weeks searching for survivors and listening for noises in the rubble, all while struggling with the heat of Florida, passing storms and thunderstorms.

When no further survivors found in the debris, the teams shifted the operation for recovering bodies. Eventually, Cominsky said, rescue workers discovered no evidence that anybody who found dead had survived the initial collapse. Moreover, the residential building collapse provoked investigations into how the building structure failed so completely and led to new investigations of older buildings in the zone.

How much Debris the Workers Removed from the Site?

Rescue teams removed around twenty-six million pounds of debris and concrete from the collapse site. Although the reasons for the collapse are still unclear, two big sections of the twelve-story condo collapsed at around 01:30 am on 24th June. Rescue and search teams instantly began combing through the rubble, but they faced difficulties and obstacles.

Additionally, the debris was extremely wobbly during the initial part of the search operation, while a fire affected the search efforts and workers even had to stop at one stage because of lightning in the area. Search efforts immediately sped up after an uncollapsed area of the building smashed on 4th July, but it was already obvious at that stage there would not be any survivors removed from the rubble.

Local officials promised to lead a full investigation after search efforts came to an end, but investigations into the cause of the collapse could delayed since the collapsed site remains an active crime scene.
