On Monday, the United Nations (U.N.) said that grain exports from Ukraine should resume within some days even as it criticized Russian shelling in Odesa, the key Black Sea port city, within hours of settling on the recommencement of the food shipments. Furthermore, the United Nations spokesperson Farhan Haq said that the grain exports would be made from Odesa and Yuzhny and Chernomorsk, two other Black Sea ports.

Haq reiterated Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ criticism of Moscow for launching the 23 July missile attack on Odesa and said that anything that is not appropriate with that is not helpful for the success of this proposal. On the other hand, Sergey Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of Russia, resisted and said that nothing in the grain export commitments that Moscow signed up in the Turkey capital would ban Russia from continuing their military operation in Ukraine.

On Monday, Moscow said its missile attack on military installations in Odesa city should affect the deal to resume grain export. Initially, Moscow denied involvement in the Saturday missile attack but accepted Sunday that its forces were responsible. On Monday, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, said that his government expects Kyiv and Moscow to obey the deal. Moreover, he told TRT Haber that they expect them to own up to the agreements they signed and act according to their responsibilities.

The White House stated on Monday that the missile strikes raise concerns about the Russian intentions to follow through with the deal. However, a National Security Council spokesperson stated they would be watching the whole matter closely to see if Moscow meets its commitments under the arrangement since the Russian Saturday attack seriously concerns Russian credibility.

Gazprom’s announcement added to the political and economic tensions of the war by announcing yesterday that it would again reduce gas deliveries to Europe. In addition, the energy firm said that it would cut gas flow through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which links Russia to Germany, to twenty percent of capacity. The move raised concerns that Moscow was seeking to pressurize Europe over its assistance for Ukraine.
