United Nations Council meets on Jerusalem Council Violence

UN Security Council held emergency talks on mounting violence in east Jerusalem

On Monday, the United Nations Security Council held emergency talks on mounting violence in east Jerusalem and saw a projected statement calling on Israel to stop evictions and called for curb and respect for the current historical situation as the holy sites. Geraldine Byrne Nason, the U.N. ambassador of Ireland, said that the Security Council should instantly speak up to stop Israelian terrorism and hope that it will be able to do something positive.

Council diplomats said that all fifteen members expressed their concern at the Israel terrorist attacks on innocent Muslims and rising violence, but America, the closest ally of Israel, released an unnecessary statement. Ned Price, the spokesperson of the United States State Department, told reporters in Washington that the Biden government wants to ensure that anything from the U.N. Security Council, be that statements or anything else – do not escalate more tensions.

Furthermore, the United States settles on a decision to have experts discuss the statement after other members of the council said the most influential body of the U.N. must react, the anonymous diplomats of the council said. However, America still suspicious late Monday afternoon. The draft statement would express the deep concern of the Security Council at escalating tensions and Israelian terrorism in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and grave concern about the possible evictions of innocent families of Palestine from Silwan neighborhoods in east Jerusalem and Sheikh Jarrah, many people of whom lived in their home for generations.

Israelian Terrorist Attacks on Jerusalem Muslims in their holy month Ramzan

Israeli troops geared up several terrorist attacks on barehanded Palestinian Muslims, which mount tensions and violence in the Old City of Jerusalem during Ramadan. Recently, the tensions drove by the Israeli planned eviction of a huge number of Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem, where Israelian settlers waged a prolonged legal fight to take over properties.

The proposed statement from the United Nations would call on Israel to stop forceful settlement activities, evictions, and destructions, including in east Jerusalem, in line with its commitments under international humanitarian law and refrain from one-sided that worsen tensions and destabilize the possibility of the two-state solution. It would express deep worry about daily Israeli extremist attacks on Muslims holy place such as Masjid Al-Aqsa, which led to several injuries and call for ceasing from confrontational actions and rhetoric.

The Security Council would also express its complete support for a negotiated solution to the pro-longed Palestinian-Israeli conflict where two states, Israelian occupied and democratic Palestine and Israel, live side by side in peace within recognized and secure borders. Zhang Jun, China’s United Nations Ambassador, the working council president who proposed the announcement under consideration along with Tunisia and Norway, called the clashes between Palestinians and Israelis disturbing.

Zhang said that Israelian authorities should take essential steps to prevent Israelian threats, violence, and provocations against Muslim worshippers. Mona Juul, Norway’s United Nations ambassador, said the situation in the region is clearly volatile, not only in east Jerusalem but also in and nearby Gaza. So, the overall situation will have grave consequences and is the last this region needs.
