President Biden to Nominate ATF Director and Announce Ghost Gun Rule

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, is likely to announce new gun regulations as early as Monday, and he is nominating an Obama-era attorney to run the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms & Explosives and Tobacco. Six people knowing the matter said that his government revealed its official rule to rein in ghost guns, privately made firearms without legal serial numbers that are gradually cropping up at crime scenes.

The president is projected to nominate Steve Dettlebach, who served as an American attorney in Ohio at the White House from 2009 to 2016. Furthermore, the government will release the finalized version of its ghost gun rule, which the U.S. Justice Department and the White House have been under mounting pressure to curb gun violence in the country. The confirmation of Dettlebach is probably to be an uphill fight for the Biden government.

Previously, the president had to take out the nomination of his ATF nominee, David Chipman, as the nomination delayed for many months because of opposition from GOP leaders, even some Democratic Senators. Both Democratic and GOP governments failed to get nominees for the ATF position through the politically fraught process since the confirmation of the director position of the director made confirmable in 2006. Since then, just one nominee of former United States Attorney B. Todd Jones confirmed.

N.Y. Democrat Accused Republicans of Holding up Gun Reform Legislation

Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, again criticized the use of ghost guns during a news conference Sunday, requesting a crackdown on the rise of the privately made guns and talking about deadly gun violence in the Bronx Friday. On Sunday, the New York Democratic leader blamed GOP leaders for delaying gun reform legislation while pressing the federal government to go further. He said that he called on the government to target all ghost guns by enforcing regulations that would stop them. The national administration has the authority through regulation to prevent these ghost guns.

In May 2021, the ATF proposed a rule to allow the bureau to categorize the building blocks that usually make up ghost guns as firearms just after the 2021 order from the Biden government. Moreover, the ATF rule addresses a key issue in pursuing and regulating ghost guns because sure frames and receivers used to gather the weapons usually bought online and not categorized as firearms by the bureau.

The U.S. Justice Department data show that law enforcement recovered approximately twenty-four thousand ghost guns at crime scenes and reported them to the federal government from 2016 to 2020. Additionally, the rule is likely to change the existing definition of a gun under federal law to include incomplete parts, such as the receiver of a long gun or a frame of a handgun.

Last week, Maryland joined Washington, D.C., and ten other states such as Hawaii, New York, California, Washington, Rhode Island, Delaware, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, and Nevada, in restricting or banning the buying or use of ghost guns, which are usually purchased online and assembled at home.
