ABC News is an Australian News Channel held by Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Launched on July 22, 2010, the station was renamed as ABC News 24 on July 22, 2010. ABC Ultimo Centre acts as the prime studio for the station in Sydney. Morning show News Breakfast and The World come are broadcasted from Southbank Centre in Melbourne. High Definition broadcast was replaced with Standard Definition on Dec 6, 2016 following the launch of ABC HD.

The Australian News Service uncovered its plans to set up a 24-hour channel in Jan 2010. The logo of the station was revealed by Freeview on June 22, 2010 in a promotion. On July 24, 2010, the promotion campaign of broadcaster commenced. Different news magazines and sources started to speculate about the launch date of the Australian service. The Daily Telegraph broke that the ABC couldn’t on air timely because of the technical issues faced by it in MediaHub in south west Sydney. Some others reported the launch to happen in July. On July 13, 2010, ABC announced the channel would be premiering on July 22, 2010. The management spoke about the rebranding of upstart network and sibling ABC NewsRadio in Nov 2016; it was rechristened as ABC News in April 2017.
Reception in Public
Initially the response garnered by the station was a mix of praise and criticism from general public. The cut down placed on funds from the government resulted in a limited budget and consequently difficulty to run operations. In Senate Estimate Hearings conducted in Feb 2012, the network accepted a $2.5 deficit in the news and current affairs operations budget. Newsroom budgets experienced a cut of 1.5% in the spending.
ABC News and Partners Programming
ABC broadcasts round the clock newscasts with repeated slots, live question session from the Australian Parliament, press conferences, educational programs, documentaries and entertainment stuff including arts and cultural programs. Other content hosted by the station includes the programming of its partners i.e. TVNZ, NHK, Al Jazeera, SABC, BBC and PBS.
The newscasters staffed by the ABC News include Gemma Veness, Kirsten Ailken, Miriam Corowa, Joe O’Brien, Ros Childs, Briana Shepherd, Jason Om and Karina Carvalho. Features and Specialty programming includes, The Business, The Drum by Ellen Fanning, Eleanor Hall, John Barron ad Julia Baird. An international newscast from Melbourne Studio presented by Beverly O’Connor also includes. ABC News at Noon and News Breakfast are the prime programs carried by ABC TV and ABC News Channel at the same time in AEDT and AEST time zones while the audiences in AWST and ACST have the choice to watch them live on ABC News Channel or can catch them in the local times with delayed versions carried by ABC TV. The Business, a daily business show is also aired earlier than its slot on ABC TV. Sep 2010 saw the addition of Capital Hill. At the same time a Chris Uhlmann hosted political show would highlight significant political events, commentary and analysis of the latest weekly news. Greg Jennet is the current host of the show that airs on weekdays and also includes interview of the political figures.
BBC World News sources the overnight programming of the station via satellite; the notable shows include Global with Matthew Amroliwala, Impact with Yalda Hakim and Outside Source with Ros Atkins. Two hours of news were also received from Al Jazeera English. The nightly programming includes the reruns of daytime content which may include The Drum, The World and others.
