Sky News Australia launched on Feb 1996 is a 24×7 Australian news service available on Foxtel and Optus Television in Australia while having presence in New Zealand via Vodafone subscription. It was established as first Australian new channel in Feb 1996 and joined Austar on April 1, 2000. It launched Sky News Active on on-demand interactive TV news service in 2004. Sky News Business Channel went on air in 2008 which followed the launch of Australian Public Affairs Channel (A-PAC) on Jan 20, 2009. Another Spin-off channel: Sky News Election Channel was inaugurated on May 1, 2016 by Australian News Channel. It then signed a partnership with Fox Sports News in July 2017 which would see a mix of Fox and Sky presenters and reporters join each other to produce live broadcasts of 20 hours each on CH 500.

Australia’s News Channel is the slogan carried by the station whose sisters include Sky News Weather Channel, Your Money (TV Channel) and Sky News Extra. Audience share of the service recorded in Jan 2015 was 0.4%. The channel in May 2018 moved its transmission to channel 600 and introduced a simulcast on channel 103 leaving multiview service to move to online portal. Aligned with that the flagship British Sky News Channel was also relaunched on Foxtel as Sky News UK and A-PAC was rechristened as Sky News Extra.

A Bit about Corporate History

Australian News Channel (ANC), the corporate company of the Sky was proportionally owned by UK-based British Sky Broadcasting (a division of Comcast), Nine Entertainment Co. and Seven Media Group with each having 33% interest in the company until Dec 2016 when News Corp Australia acquired the service. The carriage deal between the ANC and Foxtel was renewed in either Feb or Dec 2017.


Sky’s content includes live newscasts, event based live broadcasting from Australian Parliament, selected press conferences and briefings, commentaries, question/answer sessions and other selective programming. It also simulcasts its international sibling Sky News UK. It has never missed a question/answer session from HOR: House of Representative since its inception in 1996.

Sky News National was previous branding. The news coverage is mostly offered from Sky News Australia studio during weekdays. Commentary programs and talk shows also make a big part of programming in which daily news and developments are discussed.

SNA owns a studio in every capital city in Australia following the completion of Hobart studio in 2013. The inauguration of Cairns bureau in 2016 marked the launch of first non-capital city bureau. Gold Coast bureau in 2017 became the 3rd non-capital bureau after Cairns and Geelong.

Seven News, Sky News Uk, Nine News and Fox News Channel are mainly the news sharing partners of the Australian broadcaster. In addition to that, Sky entered a four year deal with CNN on Jan 1, 2011 and also has agreements with ABC America, Bloomberg, TV3, APTN, CCTV China, Dow Jones, Reuters and CBS. The founding international partners of the service included CBS, ABC and Sky News UK.
