In its early days, ABC started broadcasting as an independent radio network following FCC’s command to NBC set the NBC Blue Network into an independent organization in 1943. The Spin off was seen as a way to promote the competition in the radio broadcasting in US as the industry had only few big names such as CBS and NBC to run and turn the radio process in Untied States media market. The radio market filled overwhelmingly with news and political programming was emerging but with a very little competition as TV broadcasting was suspended due to WWII.
Radio television made a return at ABC when the network launched its maiden O&O WJZ-TV (later WABC-TV) while activating a production center in New York City in Aug 1948. From there, the network gradually started to grow across States and took several years in its expansions across country. However, the work never seemed easy as the channel consistently remained 3rd behind CBS and NBC in the ranks from the 50’s to early 70’s in the market.
Roone Arledge Period
By 1977 under Roone Arledge, the channel started to produce higher prime-time entertainment content which contributed to stable ratings while getting higher advert revenue and profits. The corporation than invested the profits to strengthen its news operations. Arledge who the President of ABC Sports at that time when took over the ABC News in 1977 introduced a number of classical programs which lasted for many years to come. The programs such as World News Tonight, Primetime Live, 20/20, Nightline and This Week were enduring in true sense and remained popular among viewership for a long period of time showing the good work put by their creator none other than Arledge.
The service started experimentation with podcasts while also adding an audio service to its applications in 2015. Start Here unveiled on March 28, 2018 is the maiden podcast of the service. Another one: Journey of Faith hosted by Paula Faris made its premier on Nov 13, 2018. The network on Sep 10, 2018 made its second attempt to expand Good Morning America into the afternoon slate with the debut of GMA Day.
