History

CNN/U.S. was launched on June 1, 1980 as the husband and wife duo Lois Hart and David Walker shared the first newscast between them. The first hiring was made by Vice President, Burt Reinhardt to staff 200 employees including Bernard Shaw, the first news anchor of the station.

Since the foundation of Cable News Network, it has consistently expanded its scope to satellite TV providers, closed-circuit stations and various websites.

It now owns 42 bureaus out of which 11 are domestic and 31 are international; all of them are a news originating source to 900 affiliated local stations and a number of foreign and regional partners. The success of CNN and its expansion was enough for the broadcasting magnate Ted Turner to purchase Turner Broadcasting System in 1996. On Jan 1, 1982, CNN2 was launched which would produce 30-minute news bulletins 24×7. The station was renamed as CNN Headline News and later HLN to cover the live news and person-dominated content.

Important Events (Persian Gulf War)

The coverage of first Persian Gulf War in 1991 was instrumental for the channel to make its place in the establishment of Big Three in news; Cable News Network was the only US-based station to get the news from inside Iraq sitting in Al-Rashid Hotel in Iraq. The unprecedented lead was cashed by CNN when reporters Bernard Shaw, Peter Arnett and John Holliman shared live updates besieged in the Coalition bombing campaign. Bernie Shaw on Jan 16, 1991 came up with the fatal announcement:

This is Bernie Shaw. Something is happening outside. … Peter Arnett, join me here. Let’s describe to our viewers what we’re seeing… The skies over Baghdad have been illuminated. … We’re seeing bright flashes going off all over the sky.

Despite the unavailability of live pictures form the battlefield, the CNN’s coverage was shared by a wide number of television channels and networks across the world expanding its reach to over a billion people. The coverage of Gulf War also catapulted the status and career of the Journalists Bernard Shaw, Wolf Blitzer, and Christiane Amanpour which were having a relatively low-profile in reporting. The CNN’s treatment of the broadcasts from War-grounds was compared to legendary reporting of CBS’ Edward R. Murrow during the bombing of London in World War II.

9/11 Attacks

Cable News Network was the maiden US cable news channel to broadcast the heart-wrenching news when Anchor Carol Lin broke into a commercial at 8:49 am:

This just in. You are looking at obviously a very disturbing live shot there. That is the World Trade Center, and we have unconfirmed reports this morning that a plane has crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. CNN Center right now is just beginning to work on this story, obviously calling our sources and trying to figure out exactly what happened, but clearly something relatively devastating happening this morning there on the south end of the island of Manhattan. That is once again, a picture of one of the towers of the World Trade Center.

Sean Murtagh, heading the finance and administration was the first employee of the network to come up with the devastating development in CNN Center to report the attack on World Trade Center.

2008 United States Elections

As a highlighted event of the year and history, CNN would spend a lot of its source on the coverage of 2008 elections. The primary debate sessions between Democrats and Republicans were produced, CNN/YouTube Presidential debates were aired for the first time in 2007 and CNN and Los Angeles Times joint their hands together to cover Super Tuesday in 2008. Election night coverage and debate gave Cable News Network its highest ratings of the year when it surmounted to 1.1 million viewers in Jan 2008, this was a 41% increase from the previous year.

2016 United States General Elections

CNN bagged its most watched-year in its broadcasting history as the network would cover Hillary and Trump in the politically polarized America. Supporters of other Republicans Candidates including Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush criticized the network for overly covering the Trump campaign rallies while overtly neglecting the others in the race for party. The channel also faced justifiable criticism for staffing Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski while he was getting paid and working for Mr. Donald Trump.

Trumps Bitter Jokes

Trump addressing at 2017 Conservative Political Actions Conference showed his love for both Clinton and CNN as he jokingly expanded CNN as Clinton News Network – killing two birds with one stone. The President-elect showed in January 2017 refused to take a question from Network’s reporter Jim Acosta terming CNN as “Fake News” following its reporting on a classified dossier containing compromising intelligence about Trump being allegedly taken by Russian government.

AT&T’s Acquisition of CNN

AT&T first announced its intent to acquire CNN’s parent Time Warner in Oct 2016. Online Magazine Deadline Hollywood in Aug 2017, reported that AT&T is considering to spin CNN of into TMZ after the acquisition, however, CEO of AT&T Reandall L. Stephenson denied the possibility citing that he didn’t know what the relevance of CNN is when considering the looming antitrust review and that the company is not thinking about making any managerial changes to the well-run Timer Warner properties.
