Broad Failures around 6th January Attack – Senate report

A Senate investigation of the 6th Jan insurgency at the United States Capitol found an extensive intelligence failure across several agencies

A Senate investigation of the 6th January insurgency at the United States Capitol found an extensive intelligence failure across several agencies, along with broad military and law enforcement failures that led to the violent attack. The report indicates that there were clear warnings, including some tips, that supporters of Republican then-president Donald Trump, along with wight-wing extremist groups, were making plans to attack the Capitol with weapons and possibly penetrate the tunnel system under the building.

However, that intelligence information never made it up to the main leadership. As a result, there was chaos. On Tuesday, Senate released a report which details how officers performing duties on the front lines suffered brain injuries, broken bones, and chemical burns, among other injuries, during their fight with the attackers, who instantly overwhelmed them and attacked the building. Furthermore, the officers told the investigation team that they were left with no direction or leadership when command systems broke down.

The Senate report is the initial move – and could be the last – bilateral review of how several Trump supporters were able to push brutally previous security lines and attack the Capitol that day, disturbing the certification of the presidential victory of Joe Biden. The report also detailed the failures and highlighted how almost twenty years after the 11th September attacks, United States intelligence agencies are still overwhelmed by a central issue: a failure of imagination.

Senate Report Recommends to Give the Capitol Police Chief More Authority

The released report from the Senate suggests instant changes to give the Capitol Police chief additional authority, provide the best equipment and planning for law enforcement, and update intelligence gathering among national agencies. However, as a bilateral effort, the Senate report doesn’t probe into the root causes of the attack, including the role of former President Trump as he called for his supporters to fight like hell to reverse his election defeat that day.

And it comes fifteen days after the Republican party rejected a bipartisan, independent commission that would probe into the insurgency more badly. Moreover, the House passed legislation in May to form a commission that would demonstrate after a panel that investigated the attacks of 9/11. Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker, told her colleagues that she will initiate her own investigations if the Senate fails to approve the commission.
